Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (México)

Description

The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) has played a major role in the history and formation of Mexico. The fundamental tasks of this public and autonomous institution are teaching, research and promotion of culture.

UNAM is the oldest institution of higher education in the Americas. On September 21, 1551, it was founded as the Real y Pontificia Universidad de México. In 1910, it was established as the Universidad Nacional de México, and finally in 1929 obtained its autonomy and current official name.

UNESCO’s World Heritage (date of inscription 2007)

The ensemble of buildings, sports facilities and open spaces of the Central University City Campus of UNAM, was built from 1949 to 1952 by more than 60 architects, engineers and artists who were involved in the project. As a result, the campus constitutes a unique example of 20th century modernism integrating urbanism, architecture, engineering, landscape design and fine arts with references to local traditions, especially to Mexico’s pre-Hispanic past.
